Some observations on casting:

  1. There is a large amount of work that goes into making a mold. The mold generates a value of its own due to this investment. In a sense it is a work in its own right, aesthetically displaying a sculptural process that is rich in metaphor and suggestion.
  2. The wax assumes a proxy (facsimile) of the final object, yet it’s soft and malleable character suggests a limited lifespan, a fragile intermediary, a sacrificial palimpsest. The burning of the wax is the sacrifice made on behalf of the idea.
  3. The amount of work and investment (suggesting the double meaning as a stage in the process) involved in order to produce one object eschews the presumption and history of making multiples with this casting. A kind of perversity on the function of labor is at play here; there is no equalizing distribution of time vs quantity i.e. the number reproduced distributes the labor/time involved in making the mold.
  4. I do not think of this process as reproducing the original, but rather the original has had a fragment torn from it, a piece of meaning (text) extracted from it that is used to form (create) a new object that may bare some resemblance (iconically), but is intentionally and functionally very different.
